Sustana’s Emily Olson and TriplePundit talk about how e-commerce can contribute to the sustainable packaging trend.

With a rise in demand for e-commerce, comes increased use of shipping boxes, labels, and other packaging materials that are generally wasteful. Brands have a chance to do something different, however – adopt and implement circular strategies that attract the new generation of eco-conscious consumers, get ahead of new government policies and regulations, and bring recycling full circle.

Similar strategies, solutions, and innovations that promote the circular economy have already been discussed and are expected to be adopted in Canadian proveniences as soon as 2025. Sustana’s Director and Sustainability Ambassador Emily Olson and Geneviève Dionne, an industrial design expert in eco-design and packaging with Éco Entreprises Québec, recently spoke with TriplePundit about the benefits of reducing the use of non-recyclable materials in packaging.

Emily highlighted how this could help brands effectively meet their greener packaging commitments. With over 66% of paper and paperboard products in the US recycled, compared to less than 5% of plastic, this is an amazing opportunity to reduce the volume of packaging related to e-commerce and recycle packaging into new products. It’s also possible that as consumers grow accustomed to sustainable e-commerce packaging that this will shift the needle on in-store packaging, as well. The need for eye-catching shelf packaging to attract consumers may no longer be necessary as more consumers grow accustomed to basic and neutral packaging for delivery.
